Inclusive Sports: New Opportunities for Individuals with Disabilities in Odessa

14 November 2024

The city of Odessa is committed to enhancing sports infrastructure for individuals with disabilities, aiming to make physical activity accessible to everyone. A particular focus is placed on programs supporting veterans and individuals with special needs through various sporting events.

Under the framework of the program ‘Development of Adaptive Sports and Physical Culture in Odessa for 2024 – 2027’, activities and events are organized to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

One of the recent events was the ‘Black Sea Cup’ in wheelchair basketball, supported by the Odessa Basketball Federation. The competition featured the ‘Odesa-Basket’ team along with teams from Kyiv.

Individuals with disabilities also have the opportunity to obtain passes for access to sports facilities, such as gyms and swimming pools. This year, the Odessa City Council purchased 156 swimming pool passes and 100 fitness club passes.

In 2024, these passes were provided to 78 individuals with disabilities, including veterans. Next year, an increase in funding is planned to ensure access to sports facilities for this population group.
