Miscommunication Regarding Humanitarian Status of Ukrainians in the US

05 April 2025

This week, some Ukrainians residing in the US under a humanitarian program received emails containing false information about the cancellation of their status.

According to the agency Reuters, this has caused concern within the Ukrainian community.

The email stated that their status had been canceled and that they had seven days to leave the country; otherwise, they would face law enforcement actions.

"If you do not leave the United States immediately, you may become the subject of legal actions that could lead to your removal. The Department of Homeland Security is revoking your humanitarian status. Do not attempt to remain in the country," the email read.

However, on April 4th, a spokesperson for the US Department of Homeland Security confirmed that the email was sent in error and that the program for Ukrainians remains intact. It is currently unknown how many Ukrainians received this email.

On the same day, the Department of Homeland Security sent a follow-up email clarifying that the previous message was incorrect and that "your humanitarian status remains unchanged at this time."

It is worth noting that in January, following the inauguration of President Donald Trump, officials from the Department of Homeland Security announced the suspension of several programs that allowed migrants to temporarily reside in the US, including a key initiative for Ukrainians.
