Italian Parliamentarians Visit Odessa

03 October 2024

The Mayor of Odessa, Gennadiy Trukhanov, met with a group of Italian parliamentarians led by Deputy Chamber President Giorgio Mule. The Italian Ambassador to Ukraine, Carlo Formosa, was also present at the meeting.

During the dialogue, it was highlighted that Italy is supporting the restoration of Odessa. The parliamentarians came to familiarize themselves with the city and its landmarks, assess the extent of the destruction, and identify specific needs for reconstruction. This will help them understand what resources and support are needed for effective restoration.

They also discussed promising sectors for attracting investments, particularly in culture. The Italians believe that history should not be erased, regardless of its nature.

«History evolves, so we must mature along with it and embrace its various moments. In Italy, many operas were written during the fascist era, and buildings were constructed. But that is not a reason to avoid visiting them or to demolish them. Art belongs to the world!» - stated Mr. Mule.

Italian deputies expressed solidarity with the mayor and the citizens of Odessa in preserving their heritage, which has granted Odessa the status of a UNESCO literary city.
