Patriot Systems for Ukraine: A New Chapter in Military Support
On Sunday, July 13, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the decision to supply Ukraine with Patriot missile defense systems. This represents a crucial shift in the policy of his administration, which had refrained from new arms deliveries since the onset of his second term.
Speaking to reporters at Andrews Air Force Base, Trump confirmed this decision, stating: «We are not paying anything for them. But we will provide them with the Patriot systems they urgently need».
He added that while the exact number of systems has not yet been agreed upon, they will receive the necessary protection, with funding provided by the European Union.
Highlighting the critical importance of these systems, Trump reiterated that Ukraine would «pay us 100 percent for them».
The President directly linked this decision to the ongoing military aggression from Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, stating: «Because Putin has really surprised a lot of people... He says nice words, but at night he bombs everyone».
When asked about his anticipated sanctions announcement regarding Russia, Trump replied: «We will see what happens tomorrow». This decision to provide Patriot systems signifies a significant change in Trump's approach, who had been focused on persuading Putin to negotiate.
Trump also confirmed a forthcoming meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
A senior administration official previously informed the Kyiv Post that the meeting would continue discussions on coordinating assistance for Ukraine and broader regional security issues.
