A New Perspective on Ukraine's European Integration

27 June 2025

The Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that the results of the recent "referendum" regarding Ukraine's membership in the European Union, initiated by his government, have led to halting Ukraine's accession process.

Orban emphasized that Hungary "understands the Ukrainians and their heroic struggle".

"We recognize that they need assistance, but we want to provide it in a way that does not undermine ourselves. Ukraine's membership in the EU would mean our own destruction. We would be immediately drawn into a conflict with Russia, bringing it onto EU territory, including Hungary", – noted the Prime Minister.

"Yesterday, with over two million votes on Voks2025, we halted Ukraine's accession to the EU", – he added.

Orban also remarked that Ukraine remains an "undefined entity" due to circumstances beyond its control.

"We cannot even clearly define what Ukraine is today, where its borders lie. Similar threats existed in other former Soviet bloc countries. This is why they were first admitted to NATO, as NATO could guarantee those borders. Only later did the EU accept other relevant countries", – Orban continued, adding that accepting Ukraine into NATO would mean immediate war.
