New Transport Corridor Linking Greece and Ukraine

12 June 2025

The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has introduced the idea of establishing a new "transport corridor" that will link the port of Alexandroupolis in Greece with Odessa, traversing the territories of Romania and Bulgaria.

As reported by "Interfax-Ukraine", Mitsotakis announced this proposal during the 4th "Ukraine-Southeast Europe" summit held on June 11 in Odessa.

He suggested creating a transport route that would connect through the Bulgarian port of Varna and the Romanian port of Constanta, with a total length of about 700 kilometers.

"I would like Odessa to be at the end of an ambitious infrastructure development project starting from the port of Alexandroupolis, passing through Varna and Constanta, and finally reaching Odessa. This could be a project proposed for EU funding," the Prime Minister stated.

In his view, this could be a multifaceted project that includes railway lines, power lines, and pipelines, with transportation via this route potentially being faster than by sea.

He emphasized that the project would provide "a clear and tangible vision of how Ukraine's integration into the EU could truly change the lives of Ukrainians".
