Renaming of Settlements in Odesa: A New Chapter

08 May 2025

Recently, the Ukrainian Parliament endorsed the initiative of local residents who advocated for changing the names of two settlements in the Arcyz community of the Odesa region – the village of Novokholmske and the village of Kholmske.

On May 5, a draft resolution titled 'On the Renaming of Certain Settlements' was registered in the Ukrainian Parliament, which aims to change the names of nineteen geographical objects in Ukraine, including two in the Odesa region.

The document states that the proposals for renaming were submitted by the Arcyz City Council.

The residents of Kholmske initiated the renaming to restore its historical name Selioglo, which was used since its establishment until the Soviet renaming in 1946.

The village of Novokholmske is set to be renamed to Aliyahu. This decision was supported by local residents during public hearings, as there was previously a railway station with the same name nearby.
