New Register for GMOs in Ukraine
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved new regulations for managing the register of genetically modified organisms, aimed at improving consumer safety standards.
This information was provided by the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food.
The new register will serve as a single information platform, enabling the tracking, monitoring, and storage of data regarding all GMOs registered in Ukraine.
The ministry explained that implementing such a register is a crucial step toward ensuring transparency in the biotechnology sector, enhancing consumer safety, and fulfilling Ukraine's obligations under the EU association agreement.
Additionally, the decree harmonizes national legislation with EU acts concerning GMOs, particularly Directive 2001/18/EC and Commission Decision 2004/204/EC.
This will facilitate the establishment of a record-keeping and control system that aligns with European standards, thereby reducing the negative impact and risks to human health and the environment.
The decree will come into effect in September 2026, coinciding with a new law regulating genetic engineering activities in Ukraine.
