Update on Decommunization Maps in Ukraine
The civic initiative «Decolonization. Ukraine» has released updated information regarding the streets that require new names in Ukraine as part of the decommunization process. Specifically, 228 streets in the Odesa region have been identified.
The Odesa region ranks fifth among Ukrainian regions for the number of streets that need renaming due to decommunization efforts. The Zaporizhzhia region leads with a total of 1001 streets requiring changes.
«This list is not exhaustive, as there are streets named after local communist figures that were previously unknown», representatives of the organization noted, adding that the map will be regularly updated.
Activists also mentioned that in some areas, such as Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv, the street renaming process is considered complete.
The YouTube channel «Odesa Life» has launched a new series titled «Streets of Odesa: Then – Now», which discusses the individuals after whom the streets of Odesa and its region are named.
Previously, the «Decolonization. Ukraine» project published a map of monuments to Pushkin that have not yet been dismantled. According to their data, the largest number is located in Odesa. Additionally, there has been a proposal to rename Mark Twain Park in Odesa.
