05 April 2025

Law enforcement officials in Podilskyi district have uncovered an individual involved in the illegal acquisition of a vehicle. The suspect stole a car simply because he did not want to walk home. He has been charged and a preventive measure has been chosen. He faces imprisonment along with property confiscation.

Authorities reported that the incident occurred in a settlement within the Zelenohirska community. A local resident contacted the police, indicating that an unknown person had stolen his VAZ car from his yard during the night.

"The police found the vehicle on the outskirts of the settlement, close to the crime scene, and that same day they quickly identified and apprehended the suspect at his residence. He turned out to be a 26-year-old man from the Baltska community, previously convicted of property crimes," the statement said.

The suspect explained to the police that upon seeing an unguarded car in someone else's yard, he decided to take it to get home. The car was unlocked, and he managed to start the engine by connecting the ignition wires. However, he did not get far, as the vehicle broke down, and he abandoned it on the outskirts of the village, fleeing the scene.

"We detained the suspect in accordance with procedural norms. We have currently gathered sufficient evidence and charged him with committing a crime under part 2 of Article 289 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This pertains to the illegal acquisition of a vehicle, committed repeatedly. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for up to eight years with or without property confiscation. The court has ruled to place the suspect in custody as a preventive measure. We have also appointed a forensic examination to assess the car's value and the damages incurred by the victim," said Oleg Sytnyk, head of Police Department No. 1 of Podilskyi RUP.
