Odessa's Energy Independence: New Initiatives

13 March 2025

The municipality of Odessa, in collaboration with the Japanese government and UNDP, along with support from international partners from Norway and Sweden, is launching an initiative to build energy facilities based on gas piston engines with a total capacity of about 30 MW.

This project is being implemented as part of efforts to decentralize energy supply, aimed at improving the energy resilience and security of the Odessa community.

The first cogeneration unit has already been connected and is ensuring the operation of one of the city’s boilers.

«This unit can deliver 3.3 MW per hour. The boiler requires about half of that power. We plan to redirect the surplus to support other critical infrastructure facilities,» said the Mayor of Odessa.

Currently, work is ongoing to connect three more cogeneration units that have already been delivered to the city.
In total, 9 units with a total capacity of 30 MW will be produced for Odessa.

Additionally, 7 cogeneration units from the German agency GIZ have arrived in Odessa. All will be installed at local boilers, with two already in the connection process. Components for connecting the remaining five are expected soon.
