Odessa's New Energy Independence Initiative

06 November 2024

In Odessa, the first phase of constructing the distributed generation system based on gas engine cogeneration units has begun within the city.

This project is being implemented in collaboration with the UNDP team and representatives from the embassies of Japan, Norway, and Sweden as part of the decentralization of the city's energy system.

At one of Odessa's boiler houses, the first cogeneration unit has already been installed. As stated by Odessa's Deputy Mayor Hanna Pozdnyakova, cogeneration units are crucial for the heating sector due to their independence from central energy supplies, high energy efficiency, and rapid adaptation and recovery. They can be quickly activated, allowing for the swift restoration of heat supply to homes.

At the ceremony of transferring the gas engine power station to the balance of KP "Heat Supply of Odessa City," attendees included: UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine Mr. Jaco Silje, Deputy Head of the Royal Norwegian Embassy Mission in Ukraine Mr. Jan Fleten, Ambassador of Japan to Ukraine Mr. Masashi Nakagome (via video message), Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Sweden to Ukraine Mr. Martin Oberg, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Mykola Koliskyn (via video message), and Head of the UNDP Green Energy Recovery Program Yuliya Rybak.

«I am particularly grateful to our partners from Yokohama, with whom I signed a Memorandum in March 2023, enabling Odessa to receive the necessary equipment. Thanks to the support of Japan, Norway, and Sweden, we have not only installed the first unit but also prepared sites for the next ones. From now on, we will be able to supply electricity to heating, water supply, and sewage facilities,» stated Gennadiy Trukhanov.

The project will help Odessa become more resilient to energy challenges faced by its residents, particularly during previous blackouts.

By the end of the year, the delivery of two more such units is expected. All preparatory works for their installation have been completed.
