Environmental Threats in Odesa and Mykolaiv Regions

09 December 2025

The aftermath of military operations and technological incidents poses significant environmental risks for the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, as reported by the press service of the State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District.
Experts emphasize that the area is experiencing soil contamination from toxic substances and combustion products, adversely affecting soil fertility and environmental safety.
At the same time, the negative impact on water resources remains significant — the Black Sea, estuaries, and river systems are suffering from infrastructure destruction and repeated attacks on port facilities.
“Air quality is deteriorating due to explosions, fires, and industrial activities during shelling. Additionally, natural areas such as coastal zones and steppe ecosystems are losing biodiversity and natural balance,” the statement says. Environmental inspectors continue to conduct instrumental measurements, document instances of pollution, and respond promptly to citizen complaints. “Monitoring is ongoing, and data is entered into the ‘EcoThreat’ system, which allows for an accurate picture of environmental risks.
Collaboration with scientific institutions is also underway to determine effective methods for cleaning soils and water resources,” the environmental inspection emphasizes.
