Winter Preparation of Fountains: Essential Steps
As the cold season begins, specialists from the «Service Center» Municipal Enterprise are actively preparing the fountains for winter.
The conservation of fountains is a complex process. To ensure they survive the winter, it is necessary to blow out the water supply systems, dismantle the nozzles, and also remove electrical and pumping equipment. After dismantling, the equipment is inspected and repaired if needed.
Typically, specialists start with fountains located in residential areas and then move on to those in parks and squares. Fountains in the city center are conserved last.
In recent years, the «Service Center» has adopted new methods, including completely sealing some fountain basins. This method applies to fountains located in the City Garden, Shevchenko Park, and the Cosmonauts Square. Due to the war, four fountains in the UNESCO zone were completely winterized and did not operate this year.
The reverse process, the unsealing of fountains, will begin in the spring. The first fountains are typically turned on in the city center by April 1, while the rest follow in April.
Additional Information
The «Service Center» manages 27 city fountains. In 2024, 17 fountains were unsealed. Weather conditions are the main factor determining their operation periods. 15 employees ensure their functionality.
Throughout the spring and summer, regular maintenance is conducted: cleaning, filter maintenance, and debris removal. Occasionally, fountains suffer vandalism, requiring unscheduled repairs.
The fountain on Krymsky Boulevard experiences the most vandalism, with teenagers ignoring warning signs and damaging the equipment.
All restoration work is carried out by specialists from the «Service Center», who continue to perform their duties despite the challenges.
