Military Intelligence Day: Honoring Our Heroes

07 September 2025

On September 7, Ukraine celebrates Military Intelligence Day. This holiday recognizes the critical contribution of military intelligence to the protection of national interests. In times of open aggression, the country needs effective and proactive intelligence capable of providing operational, objective, and reliable information as well as realistic forecasts for making important decisions in the field of national security.

Military intelligence is the eyes, ears, and brain of the army, states the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, Kyrylo Budanov.

According to Budanov, this professional holiday honors "those who fight an often invisible but incredibly important battle for the freedom and safety of our state and citizens."

"Military intelligence, - Budanov emphasized, - represents courage, determination, a cool mind, and a heart dedicated to Ukraine."

He noted that the everyday work of Ukrainian intelligence officers is a combination of sharp intellect, modern technology, strategic analysis, and unwavering bravery.

Many comrades have paid the ultimate price over the long years of this war, remaining true to their oath and homeland. Their names are forever etched in the Memorial of Remembrance, highlighted the head of the GUR. He thanked every intelligence officer, every family waiting for their heroes, and all Ukrainians supporting the military in the heroic struggle for freedom, independence, and the future of our children.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine congratulated the intelligence officers on Military Intelligence Day. The greeting was published on Syrskyi's Facebook page.

"Dear defenders of Ukraine! On September 7, we traditionally celebrate Military Intelligence Day. I sincerely congratulate the intelligence officers on their professional holiday! Thousands of Ukrainian intelligence officers work around the clock on the front lines and in enemy territory, achieving essential results for Ukraine. Their work involves gathering crucial information about the enemy and neutralizing them," - stated Syrskyi.

He added that "the combat experience and courage of Ukrainian intelligence officers are highly valued by our Western partners, who recognize their level of training, unconventional thinking, and high professional skill."

"The time will come when we will be able to recount all the remarkable operations of Ukrainian intelligence officers that derailed the plans of Russian invaders," - emphasized Syrskyi.

"On this day, we bow our heads in sorrow for the military intelligence officers who gave their lives for Ukraine's independence and the freedom of the Ukrainian people. Eternal memory and glory to the fallen knights," - the general added.

At the same time, he expressed gratitude to the soldiers.

"Dear brothers and sisters in arms! Thank you for your significant contribution to our collective military effort," - noted Syrskyi.

Reminder: Military Intelligence Day in Ukraine was established by presidential decree on September 7, 2022, and is celebrated annually.
