A New Perspective on History: The Independence Notebook

22 August 2025

The «Silpo» network, in collaboration with the family of Levko Lukyanenko, has launched a new charity project — the «Independence Notebook». This unique notebook features a replica of the draft of the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine, written 34 years ago in August 1991.

All proceeds from the sale of this limited edition will be directed to support released military personnel and their families through the organization «Azov.Support».

This historical document, which laid the foundation for modern Ukraine, was written during political turmoil in August 1991, when deputies were urgently called back from their summer breaks.

Levko Lukyanenko, a dissident and freedom fighter, penned the text of this significant Act in just an hour and a half, using a regular school notebook due to the lack of official stationery.

Once, Western leaders told Ukrainians that freedom is not the same as independence. While true, they failed to mention that without independence, there can be no freedom.

«Levko was immensely happy when Ukrainians supported independence in the referendum. It was his life's work. Since 2014, he visited the front lines several times to support our troops. On his birthday, which coincides with Independence Day, soldiers would come to celebrate with him. For me, it is essential to preserve the memory of this remarkable man together with «Silpo»,» said Levko's wife, Nadia Lukyanenko.

«We are grateful to the Lukyanenko family for this collaboration. Imagine taking notes in such a notebook for language, literature, law, or philosophy. Also, writing down your ideas, dreams, reflections, and planning projects that could help Ukraine.»

«Everything written in this notebook should come to life. We recreated the cover design based on the original, and the paper was chosen to match its color, providing an authentic feel of history,» said Kateryna Ohuryayeva, marketing director of the «Silpo» supermarket chain.

The «Independence Notebook» is available for purchase in all «Silpo» supermarkets across the country or can be ordered online. Additionally, the app features a virtual address by Levko Lukyanenko, and a special landing page provides more information about the history of the Act's creation.

This project carries deep symbolism, as Levko Lukyanenko, who spent 27 years in Soviet camps, fought for Ukraine's freedom. The funds raised will assist those who continue this struggle today — the released soldiers of the 1st Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine «Azov» and their families.
