Monitoring the Black Sea: New Insights on Pollution

22 August 2025

Environmental experts are actively monitoring the water quality of the Black Sea near the Mayachny lane in Odessa. At the beginning of 2025, numerous complaints were received by authorities from residents of the 16th station of the Big Fountain regarding possible sewage discharge into the sea.

This information was provided by the press service of the State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District.

In response to the complaints, a series of measures were initiated, including commission inspections with the involvement of applicants, local government representatives, and community activists, as well as coastal surveys and sampling of sea water near the piers. Preliminary test results indicated that the permissible concentration limits (MCL) were not exceeded. However, for an extended period, it was impossible to collect samples directly from the water body due to a lack of technical support. With the assistance of the CU 'Rescue and Divers Service of the Odessa City Council', inspectors managed to venture into the sea and collected new samples approximately 100 meters from the shore, in the vicinity of the deep-water discharge from storm sewers. Additional laboratory research results will be published following the completion of the analysis.
