Mass Fish Die-Off in Ukrainian Lagoons

16 July 2025

Ecologists are investigating the underlying causes of the issue.

A mass die-off of fish has been reported in the lagoons of Odessa and Mykolaiv regions.

This information has been released by the State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District.

The lagoons in question are the Khadjibey and Tylihul. Preliminary reports suggest that the causes of fish deaths may include elevated water temperatures, decreased dissolved oxygen levels, rotting algae, and the release of hydrogen sulfide from the bottom of the water bodies.

Experts are collecting water samples that will be sent to the laboratory for further examination.

The inspection has stated that the situation is under control, and updates on the developments will be provided later.
