Critical Water Crisis in Izmail District

25 June 2025

The Izmail District in Odessa region is facing a severe water crisis that poses a threat to both the local population and agriculture. The main water source, Lake Katlabukh, has significantly depleted due to prolonged dry weather.

According to agricultural experts, the lake is only 57% full, and if the situation does not improve, by July 1, the water level could reach critical lows. This poses a risk of water supply disruption for residents and deteriorating water quality.

Recently, water users from the organization "Water of Life" have appealed to authorities for urgent intervention. They point out that 15,000 people may be left without water, and agricultural lands could lose over 8,500 hectares of crops.

Water from the lake is used for household and agricultural needs, and wells are already beginning to dry up. The greatest losses are expected in the agricultural sector, where thousands of hectares of crops are at risk of destruction.

Technical solutions to improve the situation exist, but they require immediate funding. Water users note that the necessary infrastructure for replenishing the lake is already in place.

Experts estimate that restoring Lake Katlabukh to a safe level would require approximately 43.4 million hryvnias. The lack of alternative water sources complicates the situation further.
