Inauguration of the Memorial for Ukrainian Intelligence Officers
The first memorial dedicated to Ukrainian military intelligence officers has been inaugurated in Kyiv.
This monument honors the memory of the operatives of the Main Intelligence Directorate, as well as foreign volunteers who lost their lives fighting for Ukraine's independence.
At the heart of the memorial is the word Aeternitas, meaning "eternity," engraved in multiple languages, reflecting the international nature of the struggle as volunteers from over 50 countries fight alongside Ukrainians.
Two pillars symbolize wings and shields, their dynamic relief conveying movement and resistance. Between them lies a quiet space where the names of fallen intelligence officers are etched.
From above, the arrangement resembles an owl's eye — a symbol of vigilance and protection. The memorial was blessed by His Beatitude Metropolitan Epiphanius of Kyiv and All Ukraine.
“Each fallen intelligence officer made the ultimate sacrifice — giving their life for Ukraine. This is not only a military feat but a spiritual one as well,” stated His Beatitude Epiphanius during the blessing ceremony.
The memorial was created by renowned sculptor Nazar Bylyk, who shared his vision: “This memorial is about dignity and silent dialogue. We wanted to create a space that feels the presence of those who will not return.”
Attendees paid tribute with a moment of silence and a military salute, while General Kirilo Budanov laid flowers at the memorial.
“Many of our intelligence officers, unfortunately, returned on shields, but their courage and sacrifice will live on forever,” emphasized Kirilo Budanov.
The memorial will serve as a significant site for honoring fallen intelligence officers and will be integral to military rituals in Ukraine.
May their memory be eternal!
