Meta Introduces New Restrictions for Teen Accounts on Social Media

10 April 2025

Meta has announced the successful launch of teen accounts on Instagram and introduced new restrictions on Facebook. Now, users under 16 will not be able to conduct live broadcasts or view blurred photos without parental consent.

This information was shared in a blog post by Meta.

Last year, Instagram launched teen accounts, which were automatically created for users under 16. This required parental permission to change any settings.

Since these changes were implemented, 97% of teenagers aged 13 to 15 remained under the imposed restrictions. 94% of parents in the U.S. indicated that teen accounts would be beneficial, according to the company's blog.

In the coming months, Instagram will introduce additional restrictions for young users. Specifically, they will not be able to go live or turn off image protection in DMs without parental approval. Additionally, parents will be able to set time limits, block apps at night, and check their child's contact list in chats.

Furthermore, the teen account feature will be expanded to Facebook and Messenger. This innovation will initially be available in the U.S., the U.K., Australia, and Canada. Meta promises to add more regions later, but details have not yet been disclosed.
