Remarkable Heart Surgery in Odessa: Saving a Baby's Life

29 March 2025

In Odessa, medical professionals performed an extraordinary surgery on an eight-month-old baby. A special electrode was implanted in the boy's heart to help the muscle contract properly.

Details of the surgery and the child's condition are reported by "Suspilne". The boy, named Gleb, is currently in the intensive care unit.

The parents learned about the baby's heart defect after his birth, which posed a significant challenge due to the high risks involved.

A team of additional specialists was required for the combined surgery. Using ultrasound equipment, pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons located a very thin subclavian vein.

"We implanted the electrode not in the muscle but in the heart's conduction system. According to our research, this is the first case documented in literature for such young children. We accurately targeted the conduction system of the heart, achieving remarkable electrophysiological and mechanical results. First, we established an electrical current, and then it ensured the heart's contractions," – explained surgeon Yuriy Karpenko.

This operation was unique because it is the first time in the world that such surgical intervention has been performed on a child under one year old. This sparked international interest, leading to Ukrainian doctors being invited to the University of Chicago to publish this case in leading medical journals.

"We, like everyone else, utilize artificial intelligence, Google, and other resources. This can be verified. That’s why this surgery caused such a resonance. We are very pleased that this was accomplished in our country, in Ukraine and in Odessa, at our hospital," – the doctor explained.

Currently, the baby is in the ICU. The implanted pacemaker will ensure the boy's heart functions for 15 years.
