Creating an Inclusive Environment in Ukraine
On our streets, we are increasingly seeing individuals with disabilities affected by the consequences of military actions. Unfortunately, this number is rising every day. This emphasizes the urgent need for an environment where everyone can feel comfortable, regardless of physical limitations.
Odessa stands out as a leader in inclusivity: Mayor Gennady Trukhanov declared 2025 the Year of Accessibility. This indicates ambitious plans for the current year that encompass all aspects of city life.
The driving force behind these changes is the Council for Accessibility, established at the end of last year, which unites representatives from government, civic organizations, and veterans to collaboratively enhance the environment.
Gennady Trukhanov, the head of the Council, emphasizes that accessibility is not just about physical access, but also a philosophy of equal opportunities for all residents.
The Council is working on the city’s accessibility strategy for 2025–2026, synchronized with national initiatives, which outlines key priorities for the next two years. Regular inspections of infrastructure are conducted, during which veterans and people with disabilities provide their recommendations.
“The priorities are defined by people with disabilities, as they best understand their needs and challenges,” noted Deputy Head of the Council Alexey Morozov, stressing the importance of collaborative efforts across sectors from infrastructure to education.
The Council's main goal is to unite the efforts of all stakeholders around accessibility as one of the most pressing tasks of our time.
