Cultural Milestone in Odesa: A New Take on 'Shchedryk'

25 December 2025

A significant cultural event took place in Odesa — during a Christmas concert, a new interpretation of 'Shchedryk' was presented, performed by the city's choir ensembles. Attendees also witnessed the premiere of a music video filmed in wartime conditions.

'Shchedryk' — a globally recognized piece by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych, has become one of Ukraine's most iconic musical symbols. This time, the composition was presented in a fresh rendition — a collaborative effort of Odesa's choir groups, musicians, and creatives.

The project idea originated from music schools and choir groups in Odesa. The initiative was supported by the Odesa Professional College of Arts named after K.F. Dankevich, musicians, and creators, uniting around the desire to reinterpret the globally known piece while showcasing the vibrant, contemporary culture of Odesa.

The music video was shot under challenging circumstances — during brief lulls between air raid alarms, symbolizing the resilience of the city and its cultural community.

Deputy Head of the Odesa City Military Administration, Olha Lozova, emphasized the project's significance for the city:

“Such initiatives are not just about art. They reflect our identity, our ability to sound and create even in the toughest times. 'Shchedryk' performed by Odesans is the voice of the city heard by the whole world.”

Project coordinator Olena Pavlova noted that the main goal was to preserve sincerity and genuine emotion:

“We wanted Odesa to sound anew, modern. In every note — Odesa, in every voice — our unity and belief in culture as a force that unites.”

The project exemplified how culture continues to live, evolve, and unite the community even in wartime, shaping the modern image of Odesa on the cultural map of Ukraine and the world.
