Diabetes Awareness Day in Odesa

11 November 2025

Last week, Odesa organized an event focused on the prevention and early detection of diabetes among adults and children.

The initiative was supported by the Health Department of the Odesa City Council and the local health center.

During the event, doctors measured blood glucose levels, blood pressure, height, and weight, while also providing consultations. If necessary, electronic referrals for laboratory tests and specialist consultations were issued.

The healthcare professionals also engaged in educational communication with visitors about diabetes prevention, risk factors, healthy lifestyle choices, and physical activity.

A total of 3130 individuals participated, including 2280 adults and 850 children.

Among adults, 296 cases of elevated blood pressure and 161 cases of high blood glucose were detected for the first time. Additionally, 467 individuals were found to have a high body mass index, and 227 were referred for further laboratory tests.

In children, 10 cases of high blood pressure and 13 cases of elevated blood glucose levels were identified. 91 children had a body mass index above the norm, and 76 were referred for cholesterol level tests.

Throughout the screening, a total of 2986 consultations were conducted, with 706 specifically for children.

Diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by high blood glucose levels and can lead to severe complications such as heart attacks, strokes, and kidney damage.

Common symptoms include: thirst, constant hunger, frequent urination, weight fluctuations, and persistent fatigue.

There are two types of diabetes: Type I, which requires insulin therapy, and Type II, which is linked to insulin resistance. The latter is often preventable through lifestyle changes.

Risk factors for Type II diabetes include obesity, sedentary lifestyle, stress, and age.

Prevention strategies include:

  • maintaining a healthy weight,
  • engaging in regular physical activity,
  • eating a balanced diet,
  • avoiding smoking,
  • regularly monitoring blood glucose levels.
