Celebrating Indigenous Peoples Worldwide

09 August 2025

On August 9, the International Day of Indigenous Peoples is celebrated. In Ukraine, indigenous peoples include the Crimean Tatars, Karaites, and Krymchaks, who possess a unique culture and language but lack a state of their own.

On this occasion, the head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Refat Chubarov, visited Odesa, where a significant diaspora of Crimean Tatars resides.

During the meeting, the parties discussed important issues regarding the protection of the rights of indigenous peoples, particularly the Crimean Tatars, who have faced assimilation and repression since 2014 in the occupied territory of Crimea.

The Mayor of Odesa, Gennadiy Trukhanov, highlighted the city's support for initiatives that promote the preservation of cultural identity and rights of all nationalities living in our city, including the Crimean Tatars.

Special attention was given to the initiative of Crimean Tatars in Odesa regarding the improvement of a green area named after Noman Çelebicihan, a prominent figure in the Crimean Tatar movement.

“Odesa has always been a city where different cultures not only coexist but enrich each other. The well-maintained park named after Noman Çelebicihan will symbolize respect for the Crimean Tatar people and their struggle for freedom,” emphasized Gennadiy Trukhanov.
