Community Action Day in Odesa: Sport for Mental Well-Being

04 August 2025

A significant event titled 'Community Action Day' took place in the Odesa region, focusing on 'Sports as a Means of Recovery'. This initiative is part of the mental health program 'How Are You?', launched by the First Lady Olena Zelenska in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine.

The event highlighted how physical activity can positively impact mental health and aid in stress recovery. The central message was that exercise is accessible to everyone. Participants included veterans, internally displaced persons, families with children, the elderly, and sports professionals.

The main venue for the 'Active Parks' project was located in Odesa's Sobornaya Square, where various activities such as korfball, floorball, and badminton took place. Regional coordinator Anna Velychko and her team from the Baltska community actively participated in these activities.

Simultaneously, similar events occurred in several Odesa communities. In the Oknyanska community, around 40 participants, including youth and psychologists, engaged in exercises and games outdoors. In the Podilsk community, over 50 people, including parents with children, participated in physical activities at a volleyball court.

The Dobroslav community gathered over 70 participants for active leisure in the 'Shchedryk' park, while in the Krasnosil community, about 100 participants took part in sports activities in the village of Ivanove.

Overall, the Community Action Day involved 458 participants from various Odesa communities. This event underscored the importance of intertwining mental and physical health, as the first step to recovery is activity outdoors.

The Community Action Day 'Sports as a Means of Recovery' became part of a priority project by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine within the mental health program 'How Are You?', initiated by the First Lady Olena Zelenska.
