Ecological Crisis: Mass Death of Ladybugs on the Coast
On the shores of the Black Sea and the Tuzla lagoons, there has been an unprecedented mass death of seven-spotted ladybugs (Coccinella septempunctata). It is estimated that hundreds of millions of ladybugs perished during a two-week migration. This was reported by Ivan Rusev, a scientist from the National Nature Park "Tuzla Lagoons".
Main Causes of This Ecological Phenomenon
Ecologist Ivan Rusev suggests two primary theories that might explain this tragic event. The first probable cause is the increased humidity in spring, which led to a rapid rise in aphid populations. In response, there was a mass reproduction of ladybugs that feed on these pests.
The second reason for this influx and subsequent death of insects is attributed to the mass harvesting of crops. According to Rusev, the simultaneous harvesting of large areas of grain crops in the Ukrainian Black Sea region severely depleted the food sources for ladybugs.
He also emphasized the importance of preserving undisturbed natural areas. In such locations, insects can redistribute and maintain the necessary balance of ecosystems, helping to prevent similar mass events in the future.
