Innovative Communication in Odessa's Healthcare

22 May 2025

A seminar aimed at alternative and augmentative communication for healthcare workers was held in Odessa, significantly enhancing patient interaction.

The event was organized with support from the Odessa City Council's Department of Health and the regional early intervention methodological center.

Various specialists, including those in physical therapy, palliative care, neurology, and psychology, participated in the training.

Alternative and augmentative communication methods are essential for patients who struggle with verbal communication, particularly those recovering from injuries or illnesses.

These methods include the use of gestures, drawings, pictograms, and mobile applications to facilitate communication.

Mastering these communication techniques is crucial for healthcare providers, as it improves the quality of medical services.

They also promote social integration and ensure access to healthcare for all individuals.

Last week, a similar seminar was held for social workers and educators as part of the “Barrier-Free Odessa” program.

Accessibility encompasses not only physical access but also service availability, which is vital for citizens.

The Odessa city administration is actively working towards creating a barrier-free environment in line with the national strategy until 2030.
