Criminals Charged for Illegal Possession of Firearms

14 May 2025

Three offenders have been brought to trial for possessing illegal items. Two verdicts have already been issued.

The suspects include a 54-year-old resident of Izmail and two citizens from the Podilskyi district aged 32 and 48. Following operational intelligence regarding their potential possession of unregistered firearms, police conducted searches at their residences.

During the searches, a Mosin rifle, a Kalashnikov assault rifle with four magazines, an IZH short-barreled pistol, two grenade bodies, and a homemade shotgun were seized, along with 239 rounds of various calibers. The 32-year-old suspect also gifted a grenade to a friend, for whom separate proceedings have been initiated.

The firearms were purchased online for collection purposes, while the others were brought back from a conflict zone.

The seized weapons are undergoing forensic examination, with results confirming they are functional and usable.

Depending on the offenses committed, the suspects are charged with illegal acquisition, possession, and manufacture of firearms without the required permits, classified under articles 263 and 263-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The charges have been submitted to the court, where the suspects have been found guilty and sentenced to prison terms of four and three and a half years, with probationary periods.

It is important to note that under article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, individuals who voluntarily surrender firearms are exempt from criminal liability.

We also remind citizens about the ongoing campaign for firearm declaration in Ukraine. Those possessing or discovering unregistered firearms are encouraged to declare them to avoid criminal liability.
