Arrest of Suspect Attempting to Aid Military Personnel in Evading Service

13 May 2025

The police have detained a suspect trying to help a military conscript escape.

Officers from the investigative unit of Police Department No. 2 in Odessa, in collaboration with border guards, halted the unlawful actions of a 36-year-old man.

It was established that the suspect conspired with an unknown individual via a messenger to find people willing to evade military service and planned to assist one of them in fleeing Ukraine.

The perpetrator met with his client in Odessa and drove him to a border settlement. During the meeting, he was supposed to provide instructions on the further route across a river adjacent to Transnistria and then on foot through the forest.

However, law enforcement stopped them near the water body. The driver was detained, and his vehicle and mobile phone were seized for investigation purposes.

“We have informed the suspect of his charges for illegal transportation of individuals across the state border. According to the Ukrainian Criminal Code, such actions carry a penalty of up to seven years in prison,” said Valentina Istomina, head of the investigative department.

The investigation is ongoing under the supervision of the prosecutor's office. Authorities are determining all circumstances of the crime and the individuals involved.

It should be noted that those who provide services facilitating illegal border crossings bear responsibility, and significant penalties are imposed for such actions.
