Border Scandal: Customs Officer on Trial

12 May 2025

A customs officer in the Odessa region, who offered the chance for a smooth exit from Ukraine for 3000 dollars, will be brought to trial. She has been assigned a preventive measure and removed from her position.

Officials from the Southern Regional Prosecutor's Office revealed that the head of the border control inspector group organized a scheme allowing conscript-aged men to leave Ukraine for the Republic of Moldova without legal grounds and proper border checks. After learning about a conscript with a Bulgarian passport who wished to leave the country, the accused offered him a seamless exit for 3000 USD. She provided instructions on the timing and method of crossing the border, after which the monetary transaction was to occur.

"In March 2025, while on duty at the checkpoint, the officer allowed a conscript to pass without proper verification. On March 18, 2025, after receiving the 3000 USD under police supervision, the customs officer was arrested in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. The accused has been placed in custody with an option for bail set at 130,204 UAH and has been suspended from her position," the statement reads.
