05 May 2025

Two men engaged in illegal fishing have caused the state losses estimated at nearly three million hryvnias. They face up to three years of imprisonment.

A few days ago, during a joint patrol with border guards and fish protection officers, the water police of the Odessa district discovered two men, aged 46 and 42, from the Chornomorsk community, who were illegally fishing with prohibited equipment. They had no permits for fishing activities.

A investigative team was called to the scene and seized 93 nets, along with 1897 units of fish and crabs as evidence. All seized items have been handed over to a specialized entity for storage during the pre-trial investigation.

Preliminary estimates suggest that the fishermen's illegal actions have caused the state damages amounting to nearly three million hryvnias.

An investigation has been initiated under Part 1 of Article 249 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, concerning illegal fishing that has caused significant damage. A forensic ecological examination has been appointed to precisely determine the extent of harm to the state. Following the necessary investigative actions and obtaining expert conclusions, a decision will be made regarding notifying the suspects of the charges. They face up to three years of imprisonment.

The investigation is ongoing under the procedural supervision of the Chornomorsk District Prosecutor's Office.

Police urge citizens to act responsibly, comply with current legislation, and protect nature.
