New Horizons for Children's Rights in Ukraine

03 December 2024

On November 28, an important event took place in Kyiv, opening new avenues for the protection of children's rights in Ukraine.

The seminar dedicated to the launch of a project aimed at specializing judges in family and children's cases gathered leading experts and international partners to implement changes that could impact the lives of thousands of children.

Why does this matter?

Imagine a court where decisions are made with children's needs in mind, where a judge not only knows the law but also understands child psychology and listens to their voices.

This will become a reality thanks to the specialization of judges supported by the Supreme Civil Court, the Interagency Coordination Council on Minors, UNICEF, and the All-Ukrainian Public Center "Volunteer."

Three key steps to implementation:

  • Pilot courts will implement specialization — judges will undergo training and work in multidisciplinary teams alongside psychologists, lawyers, and guardianship authorities.
  • Training for specialists on safe family environments and children's rights.
  • A friendly space for children — special rooms will be established in courts to minimize stress for the youngest participants.

This pilot project is just the beginning. Its success will lay the foundation for legislative changes and the formation of a judicial system that prioritizes children's interests.

This is not just about reforms. It's about care, humanity, and creating a world where every child feels safe.
