Landlord Sets Tenant's Car on Fire Over Unpaid Rent

12 February 2026

The perpetrator faces a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
The incident occurred last week during the night at a private residence in the Datchne community of the Odesa region.
A 56-year-old local resident reported to the police that someone had set fire to his «VAZ» car parked in the yard. He managed to extinguish the flames himself. Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire.
Upon arrival, law enforcement officers determined that the crime was committed by a 55-year-old homeowner, from whom the victim had rented the property. The suspect explained that the tenant had stopped paying rent and had been delaying his departure despite requests. After another argument, the homeowner decided to set the tenant's car on fire. That night, he broke the glass of the vehicle, doused the interior with a flammable liquid, and threw a lit match inside.
As a result of the fire, the car was partially damaged. The total amount of damages will be determined during the investigation.
After gathering sufficient evidence, investigators informed the suspect of charges under part 2 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – for the completed attempt of intentional damage to someone else's property by arson. The maximum penalty for this crime is 10 years in prison.
Currently, the issue of choosing a preventive measure for the suspect is being resolved.
The investigation is ongoing under the supervision of the Bilyaivka District Prosecutor's Office.
