06 February 2026

Police in Odessa have brought charges against a local man who violently assaulted three individuals, leading to one fatality. The suspect is currently in custody and faces up to 15 years in prison along with potential asset confiscation. These events occurred last year in the Kyiv district of Odessa.
According to the investigation, the perpetrator initiated a confrontation with a 38-year-old local man after the latter accidentally brushed against his partner in a supermarket. A forensic examination confirmed that the victim suffered minor injuries, including cuts and bruises.
Subsequently, the assailant attacked a 66-year-old man sitting on a bench, beating him and stealing his mobile phone, a wallet containing 100 hryvnias, a bank card, and keys. Medical staff diagnosed severe injuries in the victim, including brain swelling, but unfortunately, they could not save his life. The forensic report established that the death was directly related to the closed craniofacial injury he sustained during the assault.
The assailant then targeted a 64-year-old cyclist, provoking an argument before physically assaulting him as well.
Law enforcement conducted extensive operational and investigative measures, identifying the 43-year-old suspect who was previously convicted for minor bodily harm. Additionally, an indictment against him for extortion is currently pending in one of Odessa's district courts.
The suspect has been apprehended, and the stolen items have been recovered and placed under seizure.

According to Oleg Zoshchuk, head of the investigative unit, sufficient evidence has led to charges being filed against the suspect under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

  • Part 1 of Article 296: hooliganism, characterized by gross violations of public order due to open disrespect for society;
  • Part 4 of Article 187: robbery with violence, dangerous to the health of the victim, committed during a state of war;
  • Part 2 of Article 121: intentional severe bodily harm resulting in death;
  • Part 1 of Article 122: intentional bodily harm of medium severity.

The maximum penalty for these crimes is 15 years of imprisonment with asset confiscation.
The indictment has been submitted to court, and the accused remains in custody.
Investigative and operational officers from Police Department No. 4, in coordination with other law enforcement agencies, conducted the apprehension with support from a special police battalion.
