Caretaker Faces Prison Time for Child Abuse

27 January 2026

A woman is facing up to six years in prison. The incident occurred at the end of last year in a children’s institution in Odesa region, which provides comprehensive support to children in difficult life situations.
According to investigators, a 48-year-old caretaker inflicted physical violence on a 6-year-old child. This happened when the boy refused to follow a request to dress warmer in a cold room. In response, the woman struck the child and forcibly tried to make him dress.
Based on the collected evidence, police investigators, under the supervision of the district prosecutor's office, charged the woman with torture, defined as any intentional act aimed at inflicting severe physical pain and moral suffering, committed to force the individual to act against their will or to punish them for prior actions. The maximum penalty for this crime, under Part 1 of Article 127 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, is six years of imprisonment.
The court has placed the suspect under a night house arrest. She no longer works at the children’s institution.
Judicial examinations, including medical ones, are being conducted as part of the criminal proceedings. The investigation is ongoing.
