Justice for Property Damage: Latest Developments
Deliberate damage to someone else’s property can lead to severe consequences, including imprisonment for up to ten years.
Recently, a fire broke out at a bath complex in the Kyiv district of Odesa, reported by firefighters called by the facility's administration.
Fortunately, no one was injured. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, and the police opened a criminal investigation.
Investigators and officers from Odesa District Police Department No. 1 began their inquiry alongside staff from the criminal investigation and analysis departments of the regional police.
Law enforcement established that two intoxicated men visited the complex at night. When a staff member informed them that the facility was closed during curfew hours, one left, while the other, upset, sought revenge. He descended to the basement and ignited a broomstick, which led to a significant fire throughout the complex. The exact amount of damages is currently being assessed.
Following the incident, the perpetrator fled. Police identified the arsonist after conducting several investigative measures. He turned out to be a 24-year-old resident of Kirovohrad now living in Odesa.
With enough evidence gathered, investigators notified him of the suspicion of deliberate property damage causing significant harm, committed by arson. Under the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the maximum punishment for this crime is up to ten years in prison.
The court has chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention with the right to bail set at 60,560 UAH. Investigative actions are ongoing.
