The suspect has been detained and placed in custody. He faces a lengthy prison sentence.
The incident occurred last week near a supermarket in the Khadjibey district of Odesa.
Medics alerted the police about a seriously injured 39-year-old man. Consequently, law enforcement opened a criminal case and determined that the victim was assaulted by a 47-year-old homeless man.
A sudden conflict arose between strangers by the store, during which the older man struck the younger one on the head with his crutch. Afterward, the assailant fled the scene, and witnesses called an ambulance for the victim. Currently, the man is in serious condition with head injuries at a medical facility.
Officers from the local department identified the perpetrator and apprehended him in the same area. The weapon used in the crime was seized as evidence.
After gathering sufficient evidence, investigators from Police Station No. 3 of the Odesa District Police informed the suspect of the charges under Part 1 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to causing intentional grievous bodily harm, dangerous to life at the moment of infliction. The offender faces up to eight years in prison. At the request of the police, the court imposed a preventive measure in the form of custody with the possibility of bail. All circumstances of the incident are being established. The investigation continues under the procedural guidance of the Khadjibey District Prosecutor's Office of Odesa.
