Arrest of Criminal for Illegal Firearm Sale
A suspect was arrested for illegally selling a pistol. The preliminary investigation is now complete, and the criminal faces potential imprisonment.
The crime was uncovered by the police department of Odesa in collaboration with their colleagues from Ternopil.
In the spring, law enforcement identified a 48-year-old resident of Odesa seeking a buyer for his pistol. Through operational measures, they documented the suspect arranging a sale with a buyer from Ternopil, receiving 2700 UAH into his bank account, and sending the "goods" via parcel.
The police seized the pistol and sent it for forensic examination, confirming it was a category of short-barreled firearm. Additionally, during a sanctioned search, investigators confiscated a bank card and gadgets containing information that corroborates the suspect's illegal activities.
“The preliminary investigation is complete. We have gathered sufficient evidence and charged the Odesa man with acquiring, possessing, and selling firearms without the required legal permission. The indictment has been forwarded to court. Under Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, he faces up to seven years in prison,” said police lieutenant Dmitry Kudryashov.
The prosecution will be supported by the Khadyjibey District Prosecutor's Office in Odesa, which oversaw the preliminary investigation.
It is important to note that according to Article 263 of the Criminal Code, individuals who voluntarily surrender illegal firearms (except for smooth-bore hunting weapons) are not subject to criminal liability.
We also remind that a campaign is ongoing in Ukraine for the declaration of firearms. Citizens who illegally possess or have found firearms and their ammunition must declare them to avoid criminal liability.
