The man is suspected of growing cannabis in the Odesa region.
Authorities have charged a man with four counts under the Criminal Code of Ukraine. He faces imprisonment.
Officers from the drug crime unit, along with police investigators, discovered that a 31-year-old resident of a village in the Fountains community had set up conditions in his apartment for the illegal cultivation of cannabis and the production of narcotic substances. He acquired specialized equipment: a grow box, fans, lights, and other tools.
The suspect was planting cannabis seeds in pots, cultivating the drug-containing plants, which he then dried and stored for personal use.
During a sanctioned search at the suspect's residence, investigators seized ten cannabis plants, over 320 grams of cannabis, and equipment. The origin of the seized plants has been confirmed by forensic analysis.
As reported by the senior investigator of the local police unit, having gathered enough evidence, charges were brought against the man under the following articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- Part 1 of Article 313 — illegal acquisition and storage of equipment intended for the production of narcotic substances;
- Part 1 of Article 317 — organization and maintenance of a site for the illegal production of narcotic substances;
- Part 1 of Article 310 — illegal planting and cultivation of cannabis in a quantity of ten to fifty plants;
- Part 1 of Article 309 — illegal production and storage of narcotic substances without intent to sell.
The maximum penalty under these articles is up to five years of imprisonment. The pre-trial investigation continues under the supervision of the local prosecutor's office.
It should be noted that under Part 4 of Article 309 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, a person who voluntarily seeks treatment for drug addiction is exempt from criminal liability for illegal production, acquisition, storage, transportation, or sending of narcotic substances without intent to sell.
