Law enforcement officers have apprehended an individual who, while under the influence, was responsible for a tragic traffic incident in the Odesa region. The accident, which resulted in the death of an elderly woman, occurred on October 19 around 9 AM on a street in Biljivka.
According to Dmitry Slyuta, head of the transport crime investigation department, it has been preliminarily established that a 44-year-old driver of a «Skoda» lost control of the vehicle, hitting a 67-year-old woman walking along the roadside, before crashing into a guardrail, causing the vehicle to overturn.
Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to her injuries. A sobriety check of the driver confirmed that he was intoxicated.
Investigators from the traffic accident investigation unit, patrol police, and the Odesa district police have been working at the scene.
The investigators have registered the incident in the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to violations of traffic safety rules by an intoxicated driver leading to death.
It should be noted that this crime carries a penalty of up to ten years in prison, along with a ban on driving for the same period.
The driver was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedural Code of Ukraine. The issue of notifying him of suspicion and choosing a preventive measure is currently being resolved.
As part of the proceedings, several judicial examinations will be conducted. All circumstances of the incident are being established.
Police once again urge all road users to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, especially drivers, asking them not to drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medications that impair attention and reaction time, and to observe speed limits while attentively monitoring the road conditions.
