Border Violation: Case Details
The suspect has been charged and a preventive measure has been imposed. He faces up to nine years of imprisonment with property confiscation.
Officers from the Odesa District Police Department, in cooperation with border guards, uncovered and documented the criminal activities of a 41-year-old resident of Izmail. Authorities determined that he conspired with an unidentified individual who was recruiting clients via a popular messenger app for illegal border crossings, agreeing to transport them to the border area of Odesa for escape to Romania via the Danube River.
During the operational measures, police documented a transaction with a client from Chornomorsk, costing him 8550 dollars.
The Izmail resident picked up the man from his home and drove him to his place, where he received 7000 dollars from the passenger and provided him with a wetsuit. The client previously transferred 1550 dollars to his accomplice's card. Later, the transporter was supposed to accompany the 'traveler' on a jet ski as close to Romania as possible, but law enforcement interrupted the criminal plan.
Police detained the suspect and seized cash, a mobile phone, equipment, a car, and a scooter from him. An application for property seizure is being considered.
“Having gathered sufficient evidence, we charged the man under part 3 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for illegal transportation of persons across the state border and aiding in such actions. The maximum penalty for this crime is nine years of imprisonment with property confiscation,” said investigator Oleksandr Radev.
Police are establishing all circumstances of the crime and the full circle of individuals involved. Investigative actions are ongoing under the procedural guidance of the Peresyp District Prosecutor's Office of Odesa.
