Driver Faces Charges After Fatal Hit-and-Run Incident

A hit-and-run case involving a pedestrian in the Podilskyi district has been sent to court. The driver fled the scene, leaving the victim without assistance. Tragically, the 73-year-old man died from his injuries. The incident occurred at night on the road between Kodima and Ivashkiv. The driver now faces imprisonment. Police discovered the man's body lying on the road with injuries consistent with a traffic accident.
Authorities quickly identified a 23-year-old driver, who was behind the wheel of a "Nissan Sunny" at the time of the incident. It was found that he was inattentive and ran over a man lying on the road. After the accident, the driver failed to stop or assist the victim.
The pedestrian, in need of medical help, remained on the road and unfortunately died from his injuries. A forensic examination confirmed that death resulted from severe bodily injuries.
Following a thorough investigation, the driver is charged under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

  • violation of traffic safety rules resulting in the death of the victim (Part 2 of Art. 286);
  • deliberate abandonment of a person in a life-threatening condition (Part 1 of Art. 135).

The maximum penalty for the driver could be up to eight years in prison. The state prosecution in court will be supported by the Podilskyi District Prosecutor's Office, which conducted the investigation. Police urge all road users to adhere strictly to traffic regulations.
