Justice for Victims of Domestic Violence
Law enforcement has completed pre-trial investigations and submitted indictments to the court for violations of two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Two offenders have already received verdicts. A 45-year-old resident of Izmail, under the influence of alcohol, insulted and belittled his brother with whom he lives. Another 43-year-old man from Izmail threatened his mother due to family disputes, while a 41-year-old resident of Reni did the same to his ex-wife. The victims called the police, who took measures as stipulated in Article 173-2 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses. The court imposed fines on the offenders and mandated them to undergo programs for abusers. However, one man continued to commit domestic violence, while two others refused corrective measures. Consequently, investigators initiated criminal proceedings under Articles 126-1 and 390-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
During the pre-trial investigations, supervised by the Izmail District Prosecutor's Office, police gathered sufficient evidence and charged the offenders based on their actions, for the intentional systematic psychological abuse that led to suffering for the victims. The indictments were submitted to court. The court has already reviewed the cases of the younger offenders and found them guilty. One was sentenced to two years of probation, while another received a year and a half in prison with a probation period. The convicted individuals must regularly report changes in their residence, work, or study to the relevant probation authority. Materials regarding the third accused are still under consideration.
The police urge citizens not to tolerate domestic abusers. If you are suffering from physical, psychological, sexual, or economic violence in your family, do not remain silent; contact your local police department or call the special line 102.
