Arson Incident in Odesa: 22-Year-Old Suspect Charged
Authorities have charged a suspect who could face up to ten years in prison.
In early August, residents of an apartment building on Balkivska Street reported a fire in one of the apartment doors. Firefighters extinguished the flames, and police initiated a criminal investigation.
The investigation was taken up by officers from police station No. 2 of the Odesa District Police Department No. 1, along with detectives from the criminal investigation unit and analysts from the regional police's criminal analysis department, who conducted a series of investigative measures and identified the individual responsible for the crime. The suspect turned out to be a 22-year-old man from the Kiliya community, who was living in a rented apartment in Odesa.
The suspect explained that he received an offer through a messaging app from an unknown person to set fire to the apartment door for a reward, which he accepted. On the same day, the stranger provided him with the address. He purchased a flammable liquid, doused the door with it, ignited it, and recorded the act on video for a report before fleeing. He did not receive any reward for his actions.
No residents were harmed in the incident, but the fire damaged the apartment door, floor, ceiling, and walls of the entrance area. The total amount of damage will be established during the investigation.
“We have gathered enough evidence and informed the suspect of charges under part 2 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – intentional destruction of another's property by means of arson. This crime is punishable by up to ten years in prison. The question of choosing a preventive measure for the suspect is being decided,” said Valentina Istomina, head of the investigative department of the local police.
The investigation is ongoing.
The procedural oversight is being conducted by the Peresyp District Prosecutor's Office of Odesa.
