The Dangers of Wildfires: Legal Consequences and Environmental Impact

11 August 2025

For some, watching fire ignite is fascinating, while for others, it means witnessing the devastation of trees, wildlife, burned fields, or lost homes. This is often the result of intentional arson or careless cigarette disposal.

Prosecutors in the Odessa region have submitted a case to court against a woman for the destruction and damage of plant life (part 1 of Article 245 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

In July of this year, the woman was near railway tracks in Odessa when she intentionally ignited dry wild grass with a lighter. The fire spread over an area exceeding 2200 square meters. Thanks to the efforts of the State Emergency Service, the fire was contained.

As a result, the natural soil cover was destroyed, and over 30 acacias and mulberries were damaged.

The illegal actions of the accused caused environmental damage amounting to over 500 thousand hryvnias.

The woman admitted her guilt and expressed remorse.

Measures to uncover illegal activities were conducted by prosecutors in cooperation with investigators of the Police Department No. 1 of the Odessa region.

Note: According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The prosecution emphasizes! During the summer, heat and drought make nature vulnerable to fires—even a discarded cigarette can cause a disaster.

People, be responsible! Do not set grass on fire, and do not leave fires unattended—protect life and the environment!
