Arrests Made in Illegal Migration Scheme in Odesa

Law enforcement agencies have concluded their preliminary investigation and sent the case materials to court. The offenders face imprisonment.

Foreign nationals residing in Odesa were offering men a seamless transfer to the unrecognized Transnistria, Moldova, or Romania for $12,000, avoiding checkpoints. The criminal activities were uncovered by the migration police and investigators of the Odesa district police department.

It was established that the criminal scheme was organized by a 34-year-old taxi driver who, during a ride, informed a conscripted male that he could arrange for his exit from the country for a fee.

Agreeing to the terms, the man chose the unrecognized Transnistria and paid a deposit of $1,000, leaving $11,000 to be given to the taxi driver's accomplices who were to drive him to the border.

With the support of the KORD special unit, two of the perpetrators were arrested as soon as the "client" got into their car and handed over the second payment. The third offender was apprehended at his residence. The court imposed a preventive measure of detention.

Law enforcement seized illegally obtained money, mobile phones, and vehicles from the offenders. The court placed an arrest on their property.

According to Oleg Zoshchuk, head of the investigative department, based on the collected evidence, charges were brought against the offenders under part 3 of article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The younger one was charged with organizing illegal transportation of persons, while the older one was charged with facilitating it. The maximum penalty for these men is nine years of imprisonment.

The indictment has been sent to court. The investigation was conducted under the supervision of the Odesa city prosecutor's office.
