Robbery Conviction in Odesa: A Court Ruling

01 July 2025

In Odesa, a court convicted a 26-year-old man from Vinnytsia for a robbery against a civilian couple. The man, who had prior convictions, was sentenced to imprisonment and confiscation of property.

The incident occurred in the Primorsky district of the city during curfew hours, for which there is currently no legal liability.

According to the investigation, the perpetrator climbed onto an extension near a residential building, then jumped onto the balcony of a second-floor apartment and entered through an unlocked door. Waking the homeowners during his search, he threatened them with their own kitchen knife, took three mobile phones, a wallet with cash, and a pair of men’s sneakers, before fleeing the scene.

The victims reported the incident to the police, noting that they had suffered losses amounting to nearly 20,000 hryvnias. During investigative actions, officers from Police Department No. 2 of the Odesa District Police, together with detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department, quickly identified and located the offender. He turned out to be a 26-year-old resident of Vinnytsia with previous convictions for robbery and theft. Investigators seized and included as evidence the knife, mobile phones, sneakers, and wallet, while the suspect spent some of the money on personal needs.

At the request of investigators, the court ordered the suspect to be held in custody.

“During the pre-trial investigation, which was conducted under the supervision of the Primorsky District Prosecutor's Office in Odesa, we gathered sufficient evidence and charged the detainee under part 4 of Article 187 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for robbery with the intent to seize someone else's property, combined with threats of violence dangerous to the life of the victim, with illegal entry into the dwelling during martial law. We submitted the indictment to the court, which examined the evidence we provided, found the accused guilty, and sentenced him to eight years in prison with property confiscation,” said investigator Dmytro Hrechko.
