Car Theft Incident in the Dalnytska Community

23 June 2025

The suspect faces imprisonment for car theft and has violated several traffic laws.

The event took place a few days ago during the day in a village within the Dalnytska community of the Odesa region. After receiving a report from a local resident about her stolen car parked near her home, police officers arrived to find that neighbors had detained the suspect until law enforcement arrived.

During the preliminary investigation, officers learned that a 35-year-old man from the Velykoploskivka community had entered a private yard and rolled out a scooter. Soon after, however, he abandoned it when he spotted a more appealing target – a «VAZ» car with the doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition. After starting the engine, he attempted to escape but lost control and crashed into a nearby fence.

Both vehicles were returned to their owners, and the offender was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. He refused to explain his actions.

After gathering sufficient evidence, investigators notified the suspect of charges under Part 2 of Article 289 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for unlawful taking of a vehicle, particularly involving breaking and entering and being a repeat offender. This crime is punishable by up to eight years of imprisonment with or without confiscation of property.

The court has ordered the suspect to be held in custody with the right to post bail of 60,560 UAH.

The investigation is ongoing, with the Chornomorsk District Prosecutor's Office overseeing the case.

Additionally, the police have issued protocols against the detainee for traffic violations that resulted in damage to vehicles (Article 124 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses) and refusal to undergo a prescribed examination for alcohol or drug intoxication (Part 1 of Article 130 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses). The maximum penalty for these violations is a fine of 17,000 UAH and a driving ban for up to one year. Administrative materials have already been sent to court.

The police also issued a ruling for driving without a license (Part 2 of Article 126 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses), imposing a fine of 3,400 UAH.
